Comments:Puget Sound DockDogs Joins Tacoma?s Commencement Bay Maritime Fest for Big Air Competition
In association with Tacoma?s Commencement Bay Maritime Fest, those high sailing DockDogs will be competing at the Working Waterfront Museum and you can expect a howling good time. As seen on ESPN?s ?Great Outdoor Games? and the Outdoor Life Network, DockDogs of all breeds and their owners will converge for a doggy dock jumping contest like no other on Saturday and Sunday, September 16th-17th.
?Some of these dogs were jumping more than 25 feet into the pool at an event held earlier this summer?, Said Jeff LaPrarie, Puget Sound DockDogs President. ?About 2000 spectators attended the Puget Sound DockDogs Big Air Challenge event in Kirkland last June, including more than 100 local dog owners who registered their four-legged friends for the competition. It was absolutely fantastic!?
Never heard of a DockDog Contest? Here's how it works: Dogs in the contest sprint down a 40-foot dock then leap into a 40-foot pool. Handlers are allowed to throw a single, floatable object to encourage their dogs to leap from the dock which is equipped with nonskid mats. Winning pups are judged by the distance of their jumps.
?If your dog enjoys playing in the water, this is their sport,? said Kristi Baird, a volunteer with Puget Sound DockDogs. ?Dock jumping is one of the fastest growing sports in North America. It?s not just the retriever breeds that are out here catching big air; we?ve seen everything from a Miniature Poodle that jumps 6 feet to a 150 pound Leon Berger who jumps 18 feet.? There are prize categories for dogs that jump under 10 feet, 10-15 feet, 15-20 feet, and more than 20 feet. Plan on staying for the finals on Sunday afternoon to watch some highly trained, very athletic dogs compete. ?You can expect that most of the dogs jumping in the Master and Elite categories will be jumping well over 20 feet.?

This is a free event, however there is a registration fee for amateur contests, such as best costume, trick, dancer, singer, tail wag, and smile. There is an area of the park called Fido's Farm where there is reading, and a hay maze. We will also have an art area where kids can have their faces painted, puppy tatoos, art projects, etc. We will also have microcipping, vaccines, and pet massages, along with pet artists, photographers and caricaturists. Also present will be numerous non-profit "dog" related organizations.
