Comments:The Home had a pet therapy program for some time and when I began working there as the Administrator's Assistant, I offered my English Cocker, Jake, to come in for pet therapy. Jake is a very unusual dog in that he rarely barks, has never even snapped at anyone in the 7 years I have owned him and he loves EVERYONE! One of our nursing units had been considering getting a pet to live there and asked if I would mind bringing Jake in for them a few times a week to spend the day. They decided they didn't want another dog, they wanted Jake! Well, I take him in every day I am working, at 8 a.m. and pick him up at 4:30 p.m. We call it Doggy Daycare. Jakes calls it Doggy Heaven! Many, many people to love him, scratch him, walk him and give all the attention he would never get sitting at home by himself. He literally drags me down the hall to get to work each day, briefly stopping for a pat or scratch from residents along the way. Since the unit is on the ground floor, we had to get a pet shock collar unit as the front door is often open long enough that he likes to greet people or chase a squirrel. We have had no problems since that time. It has brought one of the residents out of his room and gotten him involved again as he takes Jake for two walks a day across our large campus. He has many friends along the way. I'm known as "Jake's Mom." He is such a wonderful, gentle dog and we have seen many successes with our residents in getting them to respond once again to life. Staff members are also attached to him, bringing him treats and getting him to do his tricks for them. I just wish we could clone him so everyone could enjoy such a great dog!
