This is Colorado's premier long distance trail at almost 500 miles stretching from Denver to Durango. Spectacular scenery greets the traveler all the way to where the trail tops out at 13,334 feet. There are 6 wilderness areas, 8 mountain ranges, abundant wildlife, lakes, creeks, and many diverse ecosystems. Dogs are allowed in all areas along the trail with the exception of the first 7 miles from the Denver side. Both points of access into this area (Waterton Canyon and Roxborough State) prohibit dogs. You may begin the trail with your dog at the S Platte River Bridge Trailhead. The Guidebook also mentions another route from the Indian Creek Campground onto the Indian Creek Equestrian Trail. Dogs must be on leash through the wilderness areas, under owners control at all times, and cleaned up after on the trail and any camp areas.
