Dogs on leash are allowed. Some sites are city and state owned and additional rules may apply. The trail features auto touring, hiking, and more depending on the site. The trail spans Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Colorado. It was used as a commericial highway connecting Missouri and Santa Fe from 1821 to 1846.
