The city of Decatur offers a self-guided walking tour in the Old Decatur Historic District. The tour is called the Civil War Walking Tour and it traces the clash in 1864 between the Southern and Union forces. This 13 block tour offers large markers and plaques that describe important events of the four day battle and the overall history of the community. To get there, head on I-65 north and take exit 340. Go west on Highway 20/Alt. Highway 72 approximately 1 mile to the junction of Highway 31. Continue south on Highway 31 about 1 mile to Church Street. Turn right (west) on Church Street and go about five blocks to the Old State Bank Building. The first markers for the tour begin at this point. Free maps of the area can be obtained at the Old State Bank Building or at Decatur's Convention and Visitor's Bureau.
