Fort Caroline National Memorial is located within the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve. The memorial commemorates the short-lived French presence in sixteenth century Florida. French settlers established a colony which comprised of a village, and a small earthen and timber fortification. There are no remains of the original fort, but there is a near full-scale interpretive rendering of the fort which provides information on the history of the French colony. Leashed dogs are allowed in the fort area and on the one mile self-guided loop trail (Hammock Trail) which has interpretive placards along the way that focus on the natural and cultural history of the site. Fort Caroline is located in Jacksonville (Duval County), Florida about 14 miles northeast of downtown.
