The majority of Mackinac Island is managed by the Michigan State Park service. There are hiking trails throughout the island, many of which are within walking distance from the hotels. Swimming is also popular on the island. The shoreline usually has a rocky shore bottom so you might want to wear some shoes or sandals when wading in the water. The water on the east side of the island is shallow and good for children. The south side has stronger currents. There are no lifeguards along the water. If you have children and need a playground, there is one in the center of the island at Great Turtle Park and one at the Mackinac Island Public School located west of downtown and across the boardwalk. Dogs are allowed on the hiking trails and in the water but need to be leashed at all times and cleaned up after. Please note that at the Fort there are often cannons being fired and throughout the island, rifles being fired for historical demonstration purposes. If your pooch does not like loud noises, you might want to stay away from those areas and be sure to hold on tight to your dog's leash.
