American Electric Power sponsors this guided nature tour near the Cook Nuclear Plant which generates and transmits 2.1 million kilowatts of electricity to thousands of consumers. Carved through the Cook Center's coastal dunes, forest and wetland are three miles of Nipissing Dune Trails. Educational signs mark the three trails, giving hikers full-color photographs and descriptions of the wildlife and geology they may see along the paths. Open sunrise to sundown all four seasons - it is an invigorating hike through Michigan's wilderness. You and your leashed dog are welcome to take the guided or self-guided tour. Pooches are not allowed inside the buildings, but that's no problem because the tours are outside. Due to recent Federal security restrictions near the nuclear plant trails may be closed to the public. Call ahead if you plan on going to the site.
