At over 21,500 acres, this refuge has the largest remaining region of bottomland hardwoods in the Missouri bootheel, more than 140 identified archaeological areas, and a major wintering headquarters for thousands of migratory birds. Leashed dogs are allowed throughout the park; they are not allowed in buildings unless they can be carried.
