Valley of Fires is adjacent to the spectacular Malpais Lava Flow. It was created about 1500 years ago when Little Black Peak erupted. The lava flowed into the Tularosa Basin, filling the valley with molten rock. The lava flow is now rock that is 4-6 miles wide by 44 miles long and 160 feet deep. This lava flow is the youngest formation of this type in the continental U.S. Dogs on leash are allowed on the self-guided paved 3/4 mile each way Malpais Nature Trail. From the trail you can view the lava rock, and native plants and animals. Valley of Fires is located on U.S. Highway 380, four miles west of Carrizozo, NM. There is a minimal fee for parking.
