Central Park, located the heart of Manhattan, is the world's most famous park. This 843 acre park is so nice and refreshing that you'll find it hard to believe it is in the middle of the country's largest city. When we visited Central Park, it seemed very clean and safe, however there are two rules of thumb to follow. Only walk in the park during daylight hours and stay on the main paths. It is best to go on main paths where other people are walking. The park is 6 miles long and has an inner path which is a 4 mile loop. Also inside the park is a popular running track which is a 1.58 mile loop (between 86th and 96th Streets). When inside the park, be sure to stop by the Shakespeare Garden - leashed pooches are welcome on the paths. And don't miss Balto - a bronze sculpture of Balto, the sled dog. Balto is located between the Shakespeare Garden and Fifth Street (around 67th Street). If 66th Street were to go through the Park, the statue of Balto would be on 66th Street. Another popular area for dog fanatics is "Dog Hill". On a nice day, you will find dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds socializing here. It is located near Central Park West and 79th Street (north of 79th Street.) Sections of Central Park now have off-leash hours. Be sure to follow the signs for the correct areas and hours for off-leash activity. Dogs must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet and license and proof of vaccination tags must be visible on the collar. Dogs under good voice control may be off leash in designated portions of the park between 9 pm and 9 am; signage details restricted areas.
