This canal had a lot of "firsts" in engineering innovations in its time being the world's longest lock and the 1st one operating on electrical power. The canal is listed on the Canadian Historic Sites and Monument Board. Dogs are allowed at the site. Dogs must be under their owner's control, on a leash not exceeding 9 feet, and cleaned up after at all times.
