This park consists of more than 185,000 acres of prime wildlife habitat, and is famous for its diversity and spectacular concentrations of wildlife. This park also protects 120,000 acres of a vast complex of wetlands. Birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy the more than 320 species of birds, 58 species of mammals, 10 species of native fish, and a number of reptiles on the refuge. Dogs of all sizes are allowed. Dogs must be leashed at all times and properly cleaned up after. Dogs must remain in the car on the Central Patrol Road (a scenic drive road). They are allowed throughout the park and on the trails. The refuge and museum are open daily from dawn to dusk. The office and visitor center are open Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. With the help of volunteers, the visitor center is open most weekends during spring and summer. They are closed on the weekends in winter.
