Cape Arago sits on a scenic headland jetting out into the ocean, making it a premium place for watching ships, marine mammals, birds, terrestrial wildlife, and the off-shore colonies of seals and sea lions at Shell Island. The trail is closed March 1- June 30 to protect seal pups. There is a network of hiking trails that connect Cape Arago with nearby Sunset Bay and Shore Acres State Parks. These trails give the hiker opportunities to experience the coastal forests, seasonal wildflowers, and the spectacular ocean vistas of the area. There is a fully enclosed observation building that has interpretive panels describing the history of the Simpson estate along the way. From points along the trail you can see views of Gregory Point and the Cape Arago lighthouse. The park is open year round from 8 a.m. until sunset. Dogs on lead at all times are allowed, and pets must be cleaned up after. Dogs may not be left unattended at any time. There is a campground here that offers a variety of activities and recreation.
