With more than a million acres, and 189,200 acres of designated wilderness, this forests' diverse ecosystems support a large variety of plants, fish, mammals, bird species, and recreation. Dogs of all sizes are allowed for no additional fee. Dogs are allowed throughout the forest, except at the Timberline Lodge, park buildings, or public swim areas. Dogs are allowed on some of the cross country ski trails. Dogs may not be left unattended at any time, and they must be leashed and cleaned up after. There are also several campground areas and a beautiful scenic drive to the top of Mt Hood.
