Black Hills National Forest
Black Hills National Forest Highway 244 Hill City, South Dakota
605-673-9200
Map
This national forest covers 1.2 million acres of land and 450 miles of hiking trails. Some of these trails are located along the Scenic Byway, Highway 244, between Hill City and Mt. Rushmore. It is a nice place to stop and get some exercise before heading over to Mt. Rushmore, since the National Park does not allow dogs on any of its trails. Dogs are welcome on the national forest trails but must be leashed or under strict voice control. Also check your dog for ticks after a hike, especially if he or she was in some tall grass or bushes.
