Transcontinental Railroad National Back Country Byway
Transcontinental Railroad National Back Country Byway P. O. Box 897 Brigham City, Utah
84302 801-471-2209 Get Map or Directions
This was the place where the Transcontinental Railroad joined the east and the west on May 10, 1869, and in its heyday, there were 28 sidings, stations, and towns built along the Promontory Branch. In 1904 this branch of the railway was replaced for a shorter route, towns became abandoned, and this area became a Back Country Byway. Now there are over 30 sites that are interpreted along this grade that begins south of Promontory near the Golden Spike National Historic Site and travels west to Lucin. There are no facilities or services along this almost 90 mile grade, so plenty of gas (if by auto) and water is needed. Dogs are allowed on this trail. They request that animals (or people) do no digging. There is free primitive camping on BLM land, and when in a camp area where there are other visitors, dogs must be leashed and cleaned up after.
