The history of coal, its importance, and how production of coal has changed through the years are explained in the tour of the mine, and the walking tour (with or without a guide) of the historic town gives visitors a glimpse of the past. Some of the other highlights at this National Historic Landmark are a 7 acre park with pavilions and a playground, and several 1800's era buildings. Dogs are allowed on the mine tours as well as the historic walking tour; they must be leashed, and under their owner's control at all times.
