Shenandoah National Park is one of the most dog-friendly National Parks, with dogs allowed on most of the trails. Covering 300 mostly forested square miles of the Blue Ridge Mountains the park provides many diverse habitats for thousands of birds and wildlife. The park also provides a wide range of recreational opportunities. There are more than 500 miles of trails, including 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail, summer and fall festivals/reenactments, a rich cultural history to share, interpretive programs, and breathtaking natural beauty. There are several highlights along the 105 mile long, 35 MPH, Skyline Drive (the only public road through the park), such as 75 scenic overlooks and Mary's Rock Tunnel at milepost 32. The 610 foot-long tunnel was considered an engineering feet in 1932; just note that the clearance for the tunnel is 12'8". Dogs of all sizes are allowed for no additional fee. Dogs must be under their owner's control, on no more than a 6 foot leash or securely crated, cleaned up after at all times, and are not to be left unattended. Dogs are not allowed in buildings or on about 14 miles of the trails; please ask the attendant at the gate for a list of the trails.
