The popular Columbia State Historic Park represents a gold rush town of the 1850-1870 time period. In 1945 the State Legislature made this site a State Historic Park in order to preserve a typical Gold Rush town, an example of one of the most colorful eras in American history. The town's old Gold Rush-era business district has been preserved with many shops and restaurants. The proprietors of the shops are dressed in mid 1800s period clothing. Activities include viewing over a dozen historic structures, shopping, picnic facilities and a few hiking trails. One of the trails, The Karen Bakerville Smith Memorial Trail is a self-guided 1/2 mile loop trail which was dedicated to a teacher. The trail is located by the historic school building and there is a brochure describing the plants and surroundings. The park operates daily from 9am to 5 pm. They are closed on Thankgiving and Christmas days. Admission is free. Your leashed dog is welcome. It is located on Parrotts Ferry Road, between Hwy 4 and Hwy 49 (near Sonora).
