Golden Gate Park Off Leash Dog Areas
Golden Gate Park Off Leash Dog Areas Sloat & Great Highway San Francisco, California
94117 415-751-8987 Map
Listed among the world's greatest urban parks at over 1,000 acres, there are grassy meadows, wooded trails, secluded lakes, open groves, gardens, museums, and four official, legal off leash dog areas. (1) The Southeast area is located in a wooded strip of land bounded by 3rd Ave., 7th Ave., North of Lincoln Way, and South of Martin Luther King Blvd. It is small, not well marked, with lots of traffic and foxtails in the spring, so the Big Rec locale is the de facto mixed-use off-leash area. Enter Lincoln Way at 7th or 9th Avenue, and the area used is located above/behind the athletic fields. This area is preferred because it is safer and easier to use. (2) The Northeast section is at Fulton and Willard in a Natural Area of 0 .2 acres. This park is near the intersection of Stanyan & Fulton Streets, and is a small, little used area with no fences and prone to heavy traffic. (3) The Southcentral area is bounded by Martin Luther King Drive, Middle Drive and 34th and 38th Avenues; 4.4 acres. This dog friendly knoll has become the last immediate off leash area for people in the outer district. (4) The Northcentral area near 38th Ave. and Fulton (Fenced, training area; 1.4 acres) is the bay areas largest, fenced, exclusive-use off-leash area. It is located behind the Bison pens and West of Spreckles Lake. You can walk in near 39th Avenue and Fulton, or drive in from 38th Ave. The area is surrounded by a low fence that larger dogs could jump and they suggest that this play area may be more suitable for dogs that are in training or not under voice control. Dogs under 4 months old are not allowed, and females in heat should be leashed, and they are not allowed in the single use areas. Dogs must be under control and cleaned up after at all times.
