This trail is located in the dog-friendly Cleveland National Forest. The 2. 2 mile trail offers a pleasant hike to the Palomar Observatory site. It meanders through pine and oak woodlands and offers some great views of the Mendenhall and French Valleys. There is a 200 foot elevation gain, with a starting elevation of 4800 feet. Dogs are allowed on leash. From San Diego, drive north on I-15 to Highway 76 (Oceanside-Pala exit) Head east on Hwy 76 to S6 and drive north toward Palomar Mountain. Follow S6 to Observatory Campground. Trailhead parking is near the amphitheater inside the campground (follow the signs). The trailhead is adjacent to the amphitheater. Vehicles must display a Forest Adventure Pass. The pass can be purchased from local vendors and from the Forest Service Offices. Call (760) 788-0250 for a list of forest offices.
