Although a gradual conversion from the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro into a 1,300+ acre recreation site will be a while before completion, there is still some interesting activities at this future playground. The visible big orange in the sky is actually a large helium-filled ball with a basket big enough to hold 25 people. It is permanently tethered, flies 4 days a week, and rises 400 feet giving outstanding views up to 40 miles away and of the interesting sites below. Lasting about 8 to 10 minutes, the rides run from10:30 am until 3 pm and from 7 pm until 10 pm on Thursdays and Fridays, and from 9 am until 3 pm and from 7 pm until 10 pm on Saturdays and Sundays (wind and weather permitting). There are also free carousel rides. Leashed, well mannered dogs are allowed at the site and on the "Great Orange in the Sky" ride; there is no additional fee for hounds or humans.
