Dogs are allowed on the first eight miles of the main Mt. Whitney Trail in the Inyo National Forest, but not on the last three miles of the trail leading to the summit which is located in Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park. Dogs must be leashed on this trail and please clean up after them. The national forest advises that people should be aware of the high elevation affect on dogs. There is no shade or cover available and the heat of the sun at higher elevations can be intense for pets. The trail is located 13 miles west of Lone Pine on Whitney Portal Road.
