During the summer only, take a bus ride/shuttle to the Devil's Postpile National Monument with your pup. The shuttle is the only way to drive to this National Monument unless you have a camping permit or have a vehicle with 11 people or more. The shuttle begins at the Mammoth Mountain Inn off Hwy 203 and takes you and your dog on a scenic ride along the San Joaquin River to the National Monument. The travel time is about 45 minutes to Reds Meadow (past the Monument), but there are 10 stops along the way to get out and stretch or hike. Once at the Monument, there is a short 1/2 mile walk. The Monument is a series of basalt columns, 40 to 60 feet high, that resembles a giant pipe organ. It was made by hot lava that cooled and cracked 900,000 years ago. The John Muir Trail crosses the monument, so for a longer hike, join up with nearby trails that are in the dog-friendly Inyo National Forest. Dogs should be on a leash.
