Placerville is a historic gold rush town that was established in the late 1840's. The town got its name from the placer gold deposits found in its hills and river beds. Today, Placerville serves as a hub for activities in the gold country including the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, Apple Hill farms, white water rafting on the American River, and the nearby wine country. You can still see this town's historic charm when you visit downtown Placerville. There you will find many shops, some of which may allow well-behaved dogs inside. You can also stroll down the sidewalks and see a number of buildings that were build over a hundred years ago. There are outdoor events held in historic downtown Placerville throughout the year and many of these events allow well-behaved leashed dogs.
