Calistoga California's Old Faithful Geyser
Calistoga California's Old Faithful Geyser

Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley encompass the area known as "Wine Country" in California. The California wine industry was launched in the Sonoma Valley in 1823 when grapes were first planted. In 1857 Hungarian Count Agoston Haraszthy created the first big vineyards here. He is now known as the "Father of California Wine". An interesting historical fact is that in Sonoma a band of farmers captured the controlling Mexican General in 1846 and declared California an independent republic. 25 days later the United States annexed California. Napa Valley now boasts over 250 wineries and Sonoma Valley adds scores more. Many of the wineries in both valleys are dog-friendly and some have dog mascots and dogs that greet visitors and visiting dogs.

In Napa Valley you have a choice of pet-friendly small inns, B&Bs and vacation rentals. The Inn on First in Napa is a circa 1900 mansion which presents your dog with a doggy welcome basket on check in. The Beazley House B&B also in Napa provides a doggy welcome basket as well.  Also pet-friendly is the Chanric Inn in Calistoga and the Harvest Inn in St. Helena. If you are seeking a larger brand name hotel then the Westin Verasa Napa Valley  allows small and medium sized dogs up to around 40 pounds. In Sonoma Valley dog-friendly hotels include the Dawn Ranch Lodge in Guerneville. Doggy beds, bowls and treats are provided. In Sonoma there are a number of hotels from many of the major hotel chains. The Hilton Sonoma Wine Country is a good choice here. There are also a large number of vacation rentals that welcome your dog including Russian River Getaways and Russian River Vacation Homes in Guerneville, a Napa Valley Hideaway in Napa and other vacation rentals to choose from.  If you prefer to camp there is an RV Park at the Napa County Fairgrounds in Calistoga  and you can camp in the Putah Creek Resort in Napa.  In Sonoma Valley is the Cloverdale KOA or the Casini Ranch Family Campground.

Napa Valley boasts dog-friendly attractions and, of course, dog-friendly wineries. A great dog-friendly attraction is the Old Faithful Geyser in Calistoga where you can see up close a geyser similar to the one at Yellowstone. The Petrified Forest has a 1/2 mile round trip walking tour for you and your dog. Then there are the wineries. If you want a tour, consider taking Small Lot Wine Tours, whose guides drive your car or in your car to some excellent and not as well known wineries or whereever you would like them to show you. If you want to do the wineries yourself then there are many dog-friendly wineries in Napa Valley. Chateau Montelena, Beringer Vineyards and V. Sattui Winery are some of the dog-friendly wineries but for many more see's directory. There are many dog-friendly restaurants in Napa Valley. One of the most dog-friendly is the Rutherford Grill in Rutherford. They will bring treats to your dog.  The Canine Commons Dog Park and the Shurtleff Park Dog Park in Napa are two fenced off-leash dog parks.

In Sonoma Valley there are also a number of dog-friendly attractions as well as dog-friendly wineries. Take your dog canoeing with Russian River Adventures Canoe Rentals in Healdsburg. Jack London State Historic Park in Glen Ellen is a memorial to writer Jack London including the cottage residence where he lived. As in Napa Valley the Small Lot Wine Tours offer you guided tours to various wineries. There are many dog-friendly wineries in Sonoma Valley as well. See's guide for a complete listing.  There are many dog-friendly restaurants in Sonoma Valley. The Garden Court Cafe & Bakery offers a special doggy menu for your dog's eating enjoyment as well as a selection of great food for people.
