Ecosystem Farm

Ecosystem Farm
3400 Bryan Point Road
Maryland 20607

The Ecosystem Farm is a certified organic vegetable farm which is located on an 8 acre field along the Potomac River. This farm offers walking tours to the general public on Saturdays and Sundays at 11am. Tours leave from the Visitor Center. This farm is a model for current and future farming. The land has been farmed on for over 800 years, starting with agricultural activity by Native Americans. Then for the past 350 years, it was used by European descendents for the production of tobacco, corn, wheat and soybeans. Despite the land's heavy agricultural use, this farm uses innovative organic farming techniques to improve the soil and therefore has the capability to produce a wide array of vegetables, fruit, herbs and cut flowers. They serve as a model for land that has marginal soil, especially land near urban areas. Their produce is sold directly to 80 local household consumers through a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project. In addition, the farm teaches other farmers how to maximize their farming production through organic techniques. The Ecosystem Farm is part of the Accokeek Foundation which protects and preserves historical sites and natural areas along the Maryland shore of the historic Potomac River. This foundation runs Piscataway Park, the National Colonial Farm and the organic Ecosystem Farm. There are also tours of the Colonial Farm on the weekends at 1pm. The admission cost for the organic farm tour is $2 for adults and $.50 for children ages 4 to 11. The Ecosystem Farm is located at the southern tip of Maryland's Prince George's County, about 10 miles from Washington D.C.
