This island memorial was built between 1912 and 1915 to commemorate the American naval triumphs by Commodore Perry in 1812 and 1813. It also commemorates the Rush-Bagot Agreement between the United States and Canada that resulted in peaceful relations between the two countries. While dogs are not allowed in the monument, they are welcome to accompany you around the grounds. Pets must be leashed and cleaned up after. To visit this memorial you will need to take a ferry or airplane. Dogs are allowed on the Miller Boat Line ferry which transports both passengers and vehicles to the island. To get there from the east, take the Ohio Turnpike to US 250. Take US 250 north to State Route 2 west. Take State Route 2 to 53 N/Catawba Island exit to the Miller Boat Line. Once on the island there are many ways to get around including a shuttle bus or golf cart rentals, both of which allow leashed dogs. The park is open daily from the end of April to mid-October.
