Garden of the Gods
With Pikes Peak looming above Colorado Springs it is hard to believe the city sits at 7000 feet. But it does. Keep that in mind when planning outdoor activities as you and your dog will need to take it a bit easier than usual. You can choose a hotel from most of the major hotel chains in the city from the Crowne Plaza to a pet friendly La Quinta, or a number of other choices. If you want to stay near Manitou Springs in the shadow of Pikes Peak and near many attractions there is the Best Western Executive Inn or the Red Wing Motel. If planning to stay a while you can select an extended stay hotel such as Staybridge Suites, Towneplace Suites or Residence Inn. If you are arriving in a recreational vehicle then the Garden of the Gods Campground is near the beautiful park, there is a KOA and Fountain Creek RV Park. There are a number of vacation rentals as well.
Garden of the Gods Park is one of the most beautiful urban parks you will ever find. With paved and dirt trails and beautiful red rocks it is a pleasure to walk your leashed dog there. Garden of the Gods Park is a must see for any traveler to Colorado Springs, especially one with a dog. There is even an off-leash dog park at Garden of the Gods. Seven Falls Park is a series of waterfalls with hiking trails and steps to different observation levels. It is very scenic. One of the largest off-leash areas you'll find anywhere is the Red Rock Canyon Off-Leash Dog Loop.
If shopping is your dog's thing, the Promenade Shops at Briargate is one of the most dog-friendly shopping centers you'll find. There are a number of dog-friendly restaurants at the Promenade Shops also. During the summer, the Promenade shows movies under the stars which you and your dog can attend. The Garden of the Gods Trading Post and Cafe will let your well-behaved dog shop with you as well. You and your dog can also dine at their outdoor tables.
There are a lot of Dog-Friendly attractions in Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs. Take your dog in your car up the Pikes Peak Toll Road and drive to 14,000 feet. This is the only place in the country where you can drive to this height. Once up there, take it easy and please, don't let your dog run around. There is very thin air. There is a gift shop and snack bar at the top of the scenic highway and some places to stop on the way up or down. It's quite an experience. For a history lesson for Fido, take a trip to the Manitou Cliff Dwellings Museum and see some real Indian cliff dwellings without having to climb much of the cliff. You can take a Jeep tour of the area as well.
Colorado Springs makes it easy to find things to do with your dog. Enjoy your visit at 7000 feet.
