Sandpoint is a resort community located on the northern end of Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho's largest lake. It is a mountainous area with a plateau in which the town of about 8,000 people sits. The town offers year round activities with lake activities, hiking and enjoying the quaint downtown area in the summer and winter activities centered mostly at the well-known Schweitzer Mountain Resort. The town has a number of interesting dog-friendly points of interest but the town's City Beach and the nice park surrounding it are off-limits to dogs. Other parks in the city do permit dogs.
Dog-friendly hotels in Sandpoint include the Best Western Edgewater Resort one block from downtown. This hotel has an indoor pool and is located near City Beach. However, City Beach and the neighboring park do not allow dogs. However, this hotel is pet-friendly and a good choice if you want to walk downtown and enjoy the shops and restaurants there. Also dog-friendly are the La Quinta Sandpoint and the Days Inn Sandpoint. Outside of town the Dover Bay Resort in Dover has cabin rentals that are dog-friendly and a restaurant with a dog-friendly outdoor patio. The Schweitzer Mountain Resort allows dogs up to 65 pounds and the village at the resort allows leashed dogs. There are also some patio restaurants there in summer. If you are traveling to Sandpoint with a travel trailer or motorhome you can stay at the campground attached to the Best Western Edgewater Resort near downtown or the Hi Dee Ho RV Park north of town in Ponderay. If you would like to tent camp then consider Round Lake State Park in Sagle. Dogs are allowed on the many trails but not on the beach at the park.
There are a number of dog-friendly attractions in Sandpoint. Sandpoint is home to the Laughing Dog Brewing Company. This brewery, with a dog on the label, is dog-friendly inside and out. They serve their own beers and munchies. You are welcome to bring your own food to the brewery. The Pend d'Oreille Winery in downtown Sandpoint allows dogs at its outdoor tables. Dogs that are familiar with boating can go with you on Diamond Charters out of Hope for 5 hour to 9 hour trout fishing trips and sightseeing on the lake. You can also rent a variety of boats at Sandpoint Marine and Motorsports. From June 24 through Labor Day you and your dog can hike the trails at Schweitzer Ski Resort. Year round dogs can stay at Schweitzer and leashed dogs may be in the village. You and your dog can also walk through the North Idaho Native Plant Arboretum. There are a number of dog-friendly restaurants in Sandpoint during summer months.
Hiking in the Sandpoint area can be had at Farragut State Park and Round Lake State Park. Leashed dogs are welcome. In town the Hickory Park and Lakeview Park allow leashed dogs. It is important to clean up after dogs in the city parks as most parks in Sandpoint are off-limits dog dogs. The Pend Orielle Dog Park allows off-leash fun in Sandpoint. The Balto Dog Park, in Dover, is also fenced for off-leash dogs.
Nearby to Sandpoint is Coeur D'Alene Idaho and Spokane Washington. If you are heading north from Sandpoint into Canada then a great place to head to is Canada's Jasper National Park.
