Monterey Recreation Trail
Monterey California is one of the most pet-friendly destinations there is. Coupled with nearby Carmel, this place is not to be beat as a dog-friendly vacation haven. Carmel provides the quaint village, one of the nation's best dog-friendly beaches and Monterey provides long ocean beaches, walking trails, larger hotels and more selection in city amenities. Monterey, named for the Count of Monterrey, was first explored by Europeans in 1602. It served as the Spanish Colonial capital of California until the gold rush when the capital moved to San Francisco temporarily. It is primarily a fishing town. To see it's Spanish heritage you can walk in the center of town at the Monterey State Historic Park.
Monterey State Beach
Unlike Carmel, there are many chain hotels in Monterey, many of them are pet-friendly hotels. From the large Hyatt Regency, the Best Western Plus Victorian Inn and the Best Western Plus Beach Resort to smaller hotels like Monterey Fireside Lodge or Old Monterey Inn there are a number of pet-friendly choices. The Marina Dunes RV Park, a stone's throw from the beach, is a great RV park for people with motor homes or travel trailers.
Dogs love the Monterey Recreation Trail, which provides beautiful scenery with beach and shopping on either side of you. The trail extends for miles along the bay. Monterey State Beach, which extends from town to a number of miles north of town is pet-friendly, but dogs must be on leash. You can shop with your dog at Del Monte Shopping Center and at the shops and stores downtown and at the wharf.
There are a lot of dog-friendly restaurants in Monterey. Abalonetti Seafood, Cafe Fina and Domenico's on Fisherman's Wharf all have a special dog menu and water for your dog. There are many other dog-friendly restaurants in town as well. A number of the boat harbor and whale watching tours and even fishing trips may take your dog on some of their cruises out of Fisherman's Wharf. The Ag Venture Tours will allow dogs on the van tours of nearby agricultural regions.
Nearby dog-friendly trips from Monterey include next door Carmel, Santa Cruz, and the Bay Area.
