This is the Place" Heritage Park marks the end of the 1,300 mile journey of the first Mormon settlers into the Salt Lake Valley in 1847, and is home to the Old Deseret Village (seasonal), a living history museum/town depicting life of that era. The monument, erected in 1947 and sitting just south of the village, is over 60 feet tall, 86 feet long, and acknowledges the early Spanish explorers and missionaries, the trappers, the Donner-Reed party, and the Mormon pioneers. The park is open year round from dawn to dusk for day use. There is picnicking, a visitor's center and museum (hours vary), a Mormon handicraft store, modern rest rooms, drinking water, and hiking trails nearby. Dogs of all sizes are allowed at the monument and around the park; they are not allowed in the Old Deseret Village. Dogs must be leashed and cleaned up after at all times.
